Myopia is more commonly known as nearsightedness. It is one of the common types of refractive errors. The other common types of refractive errors include hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism. Unlike the other types of refractive errors, nearsightedness is diagnosed when a patient is able to see objects that are close by more clearly than objects that are far away. That is how nearsightedness gets its name — because patients can see objects that are nearby.

Our trained ophthalmologists and optometrist at Mack Eye Center can diagnose nearsightedness after a comprehensive eye exam. Once diagnosed, a doctor will discuss the ways to overcome nearsightedness including glasses, contact lenses and LASIK.

Glasses

Glasses are perhaps the most well-known method of overcoming nearsightedness. Glasses correct the eye’s refractive errors by bending light as it enters the eye to ensure it reaches the correct spot on the retina. This sharpens vision, resulting in a crisp, clear image.

Glasses have advanced dramatically over the years. Mack Eye Center has a number of lens and frame options available to suit your needs and taste.

Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are another way to overcome nearsightedness. Contact lenses are small, round lenses that correct refractive errors in much the same way as glasses. Contact lenses refract and focus light so that objects appear clear. Unlike glasses, contacts sit on the eyeball.

There are a number of types of contact lenses available. At Mack Eye Center, we offer patients the option to order their contact lenses online.

LASIK

LASIK is the preferred method of many patients to overcome nearsightedness. LASIK is a type of laser refractive surgery. During the procedure, our trained ophthalmologist creates a small incision in the outer cornea and then folds it back like a little flap. The cornea is the clear, dome-shaped front part of the eye that allows light to enter the eye. The ophthalmologist then reshapes the cornea and closes the flap. Once the procedure is complete, vision is clearer because the reshaped cornea can properly refract light.

LASIK surgery is a quick, painless procedure. After undergoing LASIK, patients can enjoy crisp, clear vision without having to rely on glasses or contact lenses. Patients recover quickly after LASIK surgery and enjoy long-lasting benefits.
